It's been a while since I've posted anything on this blog, but with all the excitement this week, this post was needed. If for anything, it would be to capture all the events so that 10+ years from now, I can say to my teenage daughter, "This is what I had to go through to bring you into this world".
I can attest to the fact that Baby Gray loves College Basketball. On Sunday, March 21, (and I think more precisely, after Michigan State beat Maryland with a 3 point shot at the buzzer), I had a minor placenta abruption that prompted us to be admitted into the hospital for constant monitoring at least for 48 hours. The next day we had the High Risk Specialist (Perinatologist) do an ultrasound to check the baby and the placenta. This is when we found out that Baby Gray's size was very small for her gestational age. She was measuring 2 weeks behind and in the 10 percentile. We were surprised because about a month prior, she was measuring in the 50th percentile. It turns out the my placenta is not giving her what she wants to grow at a normal pace. However, she is still getting adequate blood flow to her brain and her heart looks very strong. Because of her size and having some contractions, they gave me two doses of Betamethasone to speed up her lung developement and prevent brain bleeds just in case we delivered her while in the hospital. For the next two days we were on constant monitoring. If everything looked good, then we could leave on Wednesday. Unfortuntaley, Baby Gray didn't cooperate. She had some decelerations in her heart rate. That, in combination with her size, doctors wanted me to stay in a hospital bed with more monitoring.
This morning, I was discharged from the hospital, nearly a week since being admitted. Baby Gray is doing well, but we do have to see the High Risk Specialist twice next week for Bio Physical Scans (monitoring on baby's blood flow). On Monday (April 5), they will check her growth over the last two weeks. If she's growing, then she will be able to "cook" some more. If she's not making progress, then we will get to meet our little girl a month early.
All in all, baby looks great. She's just a little small.
